In this interesting paper, continuing their own investigations, the authors design an algorithm through a variational approach for inpainting problems of locally damaged 2-dim images. Their formulation is based on the Blake and Zisserman functional treatment of image inpainting problems. The obtained results are based on regularity matters for second order free discontinuity Dirichlet problems published by the authors in several papers elsewhere (see, e.g., [\textit{M. Carriero} et al., Adv. Math. Sci. Appl. 20, No. 1, 107--141 (2010; Zbl 1220.49001)]. On their turn these are a sequel of fundamental techniques introduced by \textit{E. De Giorgi} and \textit{L. Ambrosio} in [\textit{E. De Giorgi} and \textit{L. Ambrosio}, ``New functionals in calculus of variations'', in: Nonsmooth optimization and related topics, Proc. 4th Course Int. Sch. Math., Erice/Italy 1988, Ettore Majorana Int. Sci. Ser., Phys. Sci. 43, 49--59 (1989; Zbl 0735.49001)] that have been widely used to handle problems arising in 2-dim restoring processes.
