Let \(S\) be a smooth minimal complex projective surface of maximal Albanese dimension. It is known that, \(K_S^2\) and \(\chi(\omega_S)\), the two fundamental discrete invariants of \(S\), satisfy the Severi inequality \(K_S^2 \geq4\chi(\omega_S)\), which was proved by \textit{R. Pardini} [Invent. Math. 159, No. 3, 669--672 (2005; Zbl 1082.14041)]. In the paper under review, the author generalized this result to the higher dimensional case. Let \(X\) be a normal, minimal, \(\mathbb{Q}\)-Gorenstein complex projective variety of dimension \(n\). The author proves that, if \(X\) is of maximal Albanese dimension, then \(K_X^n \geq2n!\chi(\omega_X)\). He obtains this result by proving a relative Noether inequality, which is the higher dimensional analogue of \textit{G. Xiao}'s slope inequality [Math. Ann. 276, No. 3, 449--466 (1987; Zbl 0596.14028)], and by using Pardini's limiting argument. The author also gives an example to show that the bound is sharp.
