This paper provides a proof of a statement made in the author's book [Characters of reductive groups over a finite field. Princeton, New Jersey: Princeton University Press (1984; Zbl 0556.20033)]. Let \(G\) be a connected reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic \(p\). Assume that \(p\) is not a bad prime for \(G\). The old statement, given without proof at the time, concerns the equivalence of two constructions associating a certain finite group to a \textit{family} of irreducible representations of the Weyl group. The paper starts with developing some combinatorics. Then the proof uses known case by case descriptions of the Springer correspondence.
