This paper studies non-similar solutions of an unsteady mixed convection boundary layer flow over a vertical cone in the presence of non-uniform surface mass transfer through a slot. The flow unsteadiness is caused by the time-dependent free stream velocity. Under a set of non-similar transformations, the coupled dimensional governing partial differential boundary layer equations along with the corresponding boundary conditions are transformed into a dimensionless form. These equations are then solved numerically by the combination of the quasi-linearization technique along with an implicit finite difference scheme for different values of the governing parameters. Both accelerating and decelerating free stream velocities are considered. The obtained results are reported to display the effects of non-uniform single and double slot suction or injection on the skin friction along the surface of the cone and heat transfer coefficient from the surface of the cone. Velocity and temperature profiles as well as the skin friction and heat transfer (Nusselt number) coefficients are presented for some values of the Prandtl number, buoyancy or mixed convection and mass transfer (suction or injection) parameters at different stream-wise locations and various times. It is found, among others, that there is an overshoot in the velocity profiles, and it is reduced by the time-dependent upstream velocity as well as suction; the skin friction coefficient decreases with the increase of the Prandtl number, whereas the Nusselt number increases with the Prandtl number; the skin friction and heat transfer coefficients increase with the increase of mass transfer rate; a double slot is less effective for the skin friction, and heat transfer coefficients when compared to a single slot having the same total mass flow rate; etc. It is also mentioned that double slot suction is more effective compared to single slot suction in dealing with separation. However, the separation phenomenon is not observed in the present study. The paper is very interesting and well written.
