This long, technical article is an advance in the theory of asymptotics of the Bergman kernel of high tensor powers of a holomorphic line bundle over a complex manifold. For background on this area of complex geometry one can consult a book by \textit{X. Ma} and the second author [Holomorphic Morse inequalities and Bergman kernels. Basel: Birkhäuser (2007; Zbl 1135.32001)]. The first main result of this paper is a local asymptotic expansion of the spectral function of the Kodaira Laplacian on \(L^k\) on a not necessarily compact Hermitian manifold \(M\) for states of energy less than \(k^{-N_0}\) for a fixed natural number \(N_0\). This general result requires no global assumptions on the manifold and the line bundle. The authors then prove a local asymptotic expansion for the Bergman kernel under the mild additional assumption of a small spectral gap. One of the points of this work is that the asymptotics are valid under minimal hypotheses. Some applications are a proof that if \(L\) is semi-positive on a complete Kähler manifold \(M\), then the Bergman kernel of \(L^k\otimes K_M\) admits a full asymptotic expansion on the non-degenerate locus of \(L\); and if \(L\) is semi-positive and positive at some point of a compact complex manifold, then the Bergman kernel of \(L^k\) admits a full asymptotic expansion on the set where \(L\) is positive, with the possible exception of a proper analytic subvariety. The authors also handle the case of singular metrics on the line bundle, showing that there is an asymptotic expansion for the kernel on the regular locus when the curvature current is strictly positive and smooth outside a proper analytic set. A consequence is a new proof of the Shiffman conjecture. Additionally, the authors give formulas for the leading terms of the asymptotic expansion of the spectral function, and they recover the leading coefficients of the expansion of the Bergman kernel. ``Other applications of the main results are local and global holomorphic Morse inequalities, a local form of the expansion of the Bergman kernel on forms, examples of manifolds having very small spectral gap, Tian's convergence theorem and equidistribution of zeros of holomorphic sections in the case of singular metrics.''
