The fluid-solid interface-tracking/interface-capturing technique with arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian interface-tracking and Eulerian interface-capturing is applied to the computations of two-dimensional fluid-structure interaction problems with flapping and contact. The model with contacting flaps represents a valve problem from biomechanics. The incompressible fluid flow is modeled by Navier-Stokes equations, and the nonlinear elasticity is modeled by a second-order in time wave equation. The fluid-solid interface-tracking/interface-capturing technique is complemented with local mesh adaptivity, which significantly increases the performance of the interface-capturing component. The discretization is based on the Rothe method whereas a Galerkin finite element scheme is used for spatial discretization. Several numerical tests are performed. In the first set, two flapping membranes in a channel are considered by adopting the fully Eulerian approach. In the second example, one flapping membrane and a movable elastic arterial structure are tackled. Moreover, the mass in the Eulerian structure is controlled in order to see if a mass loss occurs. Finally, an example with moderate wall displacements and contact of flaps is presented.
