The authors prove a generalization of the Khukhro-Makarenko theorem [\textit{E. I. Khukhro} and \textit{N. Yu. Makarenko}, J. Lond. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 75, No. 3, 635-646 (2007; Zbl 1132.20013)] which states that if a group \(G\) has a subgroup of finite index \(n\) satisfying a multilinear commutator law \(\kappa\equiv 1\), then \(G\) has a characteristic subgroup which satisfies the same law and has finite index bounded in terms of \(n\) and \(\kappa\). The main theorem of the paper under review is a completely general result, which can be used to prove theorems about algebraic and combinatorial structures different from groups. For example, as a corollary, it is proved that: if some graph \(\mathcal G\) can made planar by removing a finite number of edges, then this finite set of edges can be chosen invariant with respect to \(\Aut(\mathcal G)\).
