Let \(F\) be a number field with adèle ring \(\mathbb{A}_F\). The exterior cube \(L\)-function of an irreducible cuspidal automorphic representation \(\pi\) of \(\text{GL}(n,\mathbb{A}_F)\) twisted by a Größencharacter \(\chi\) of \(F\) is given by the Euler product \[ L(s,\pi,\Lambda^3\otimes\chi)=\prod_\nu L(s,\pi_\nu,\Lambda^3\otimes\chi_\nu). \] At the finite places \(\nu\) where both \(\pi_\nu\) and \(\chi_\nu\) are unramified, the local Euler factor is given by \[ L(s,\pi_\nu,\Lambda^3\otimes \chi_\nu)=\prod_{1\leq i < j < k \leq n}\frac{1}{1-\mu_{\nu,i}\mu_{\nu,j}c_\nu(\chi)q_\nu^{-s}} \] where \(\text{diag}[\mu_{\nu,1},\dots,\mu_{\nu,n}]\) is a representative of a conjugacy class \(c_\nu(\pi)\) in \(\text{GL}(n,\mathbb{C})\) and where \(c_\nu(\chi)\in\mathbb{C}^\times\) (these are both associated to \(\pi\) via Hecke theory). Also, \(q_\nu\) is the cardinality of the residue field of the completion of \(F\) at \(\nu\). \textit{D. Ginzburg} and \textit{S. Rallis} [Compos. Math. 123, No. 3, 243--272 (2000; Zbl 0989.11024)] constructed a Rankin-Selberg integral to represent this \(L\)-function when \(n=6\). As usual, their main theorem contains a statement like \textit{can have at most a simple pole at \(s=0\) or \(s=1\)}. In the paper under review, the author characterizes when the exterior cube \(L\)-function defined above has a pole. In particular, as predicted by Ginzburg and Rallis, for irreducible cuspidal automorphic representations of \(\text{GL}(6,\mathbb{A}_F)\) with central character \(\omega_\pi\) such that \(\omega_\pi\chi^2\) has order two the author proves that the exterior cube \(L\)-function has a pole at \(s=1\) if and only if \(\pi\) is induced automorphically from an irreducible cuspidal automorphic representation of \(\text{GL}(3,\mathbb{A}_K)\) with central character \(\chi^{-1}\circ N_{K/F}\). Here \(K/F\) is the quadratic extension associated to the character \(\omega_\pi\chi^2\) and \(N_{K/F}\) is the norm map. The proof is very short and makes use of various results in the literature.
