The authors want to study the characterizations of Hopf hypersurfaces in a non-flat complex space. By a so-called Hopf hypersurface is meant a real hypersurface \(M\) in a complex space form \(M_n(c), c\neq 0\), for which the structure vector field \(\xi=-JN\) satisfies the condition \(A\xi=\alpha\xi\), where \(J\) is the complex structure on \(M_n(c)\), \(N\) is the unit normal vector field on \(M\) and \(A\) is the shape operator of \(M\). \textit{U-H. Ki} and two of the present authors gave a theorem in [Bull. Korean Math. Soc. 47, No. 1, 1--15 (2010; Zbl 1191.53039)] as follows: Theorem. Let \(M\) be a real hypersurface of \(M_n(c), c\neq 0\). It satisfies \(R_{\xi} L_{\xi}=0\) if and only if \(M\) is locally congruent to one of the model spaces of type A. Here \(R_{\xi}\) is the Jacobi operator \(R_{\xi}=R(\cdot,\xi)\xi\) with respect to the structure vector field \(\xi\), and the induced operator \(L_{\xi}\) is defined by \((\mathcal{L}_{\xi}g)(X,Y)=g(L_{\xi}X,Y)\) for any vector fields \(X\) and \(Y\) on \(M\). In this paper the authors prove the following: Theorem 1. Let \(M\) be a real hypersurface satisfying \(R_{\xi} L_{\xi}=L_{\xi} R_{\xi}\) in a complex space form \(M_n(c), c\neq 0\). Then \(M\) is a Hopf hypersurface in \(M_n(c)\). Theorem 2. Let \(M\) be a real hypersurface in a complex space form \(M_n(c), c\neq 0\). Then it satisfies \(R_{\xi} L_{\xi}=L_{\xi} R_{\xi}\) on \(M\) if and only if \(M\) is locally congruent to {\parindent=6mm \begin{itemize}\item[(1)] a Hopf hypersurface with \(A\xi=0\), or \item[(2)] one of the model spaces of type A. \end{itemize}} Here, the model spaces of type A are the real hypersurfaces of type \(A_1\) or \(A_2\) in \(P_n(\mathbb{C})\), see [\textit{R. Takagi}, Osaka J. Math. 10, 495--506 (1973; Zbl 0274.53062)], or of type \(A_0\), \(A_1\) or \(A_2\) in \(H_n(\mathbb{C})\), see [\textit{J. Berndt}, J. Reine Angew. Math. 395, 132--141 (1989; Zbl 0655.53046)].
