Take the heat equation \[ \frac{\partial}{\partial t} \psi= \frac{1}{2}\frac{\partial^2}{\partial z^2} \psi, \] and consider the following ansatz \[ \psi(x,t)=e^{-\frac{1}{2}h(t)z^2+r(t)}\Phi(z,x_2(t),\dots,x_{n+1}(t)) \] for some \(n\in\mathbb{Z}^+\). This ansatz leads to an ordinary differential equation for \(h(t)\) of type \[ D_{n+1}(h)-P_n(D_1(h),\dots,D_{n-1}(h))=0, \] where \(D_1(h)=(\frac{d}{dt}+h)h\), \(D_n(h)=(\frac{d}{dt}+2nh)D_{n-1}(h)\) and \(P_n\) is a homogeneous polynomial of degree \(-4(n+2)\) for the grading \(\deg x_k=-4k\). The main result of the paper are conditions on the coefficients of the polynomial \(P_n\) under which this ordinary differential equation for \(n=3,4,5\) passes the Painleve test.
