In this paper the \textit{character degree simplicial complex} of a finite group \(G\) is introduced as the common divisor simplicial complex on the set \(\text{cd}(G)-\{1\}\) (where \(\text{cd}(G)\) is the set of (complex irreducible) character degrees of \(G\)). This notion is a generalization of the well-known common divisor graph on the character degrees of a finite group. The main result of the paper under review can be viewed as generalization of a result by \textit{D. Benjamin} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 125, No. 10, 2831-2837 (1997; Zbl 0889.20004)] and states the following. Let \(G\) be a finite solvable group. If the character degree simplicial complex of \(G\) is connected and of dimension \(n\), then the rank of its fundamental group is bounded above by \(n^2+n-1\). -- All topological notions needed are carefully explained in the paper.
