The main goal of this paper is to establish a sufficient condition for a nonsingular Hermitian matrix \(A\) to have at least a certain number \(m\) of eigenvalues in an interval with symmetric endpoints. The condition is expressed in terms of the existence of a principal matrix whose Schur complement in \(A\) has at least \(m\) eigenvalues in another interval. The results are applied to a random Schrödinger operator among other physical models.
