The authors give the concepts of finite-dimensional irreducible (FDI) operators, infinite-dimensional irreducible operators and investigate their relationships with strongly irreducible operators. Let \(X\) be a Banach space. An operator \(T \in B(X)\) is said to be strongly irreducible if there exist no nontrivial closed invariant subspaces \(M\) and \(N\) of \(T\) such that \(X\) is the direct sum of \(M\) and \(N\). An operator \(T \in B(X)\) is said to be finite-dimensional irreducible (infinite-dimensional irreducible, resp.)\ if there exist no such subspaces \(M\) and \(N\) with \(\dim M<\infty\) (\(\dim M =\dim N =\infty\), resp.). The authors also use Rosenblum operators to give some sufficient conditions for the finite-dimensional irreducibility of operators which are of the form of upper triangular operator matrices. They discuss small compact perturbations of (FDI) operators. More precisely, they prove that every operator with a singleton spectrum is a small compact perturbation of an (FDI) operator on separable Banach spaces, which generalizes a result of \textit{Y.-N. Zhang} et al. [Sci. China, Math. 54, No. 4, 723--740 (2011; Zbl 1221.47004)]. In addition, they show that every operator \(T \in B(X)\) can be approximated by operators in (\(\Sigma\)FDI)\((X)\) with respect to the strong operator topology and every compact operator \(K\in B(X)\) can be approximated by operators in (\(\Sigma\)FDI)\((X)\) with respect to the norm topology on \(X\) when it has a Schauder basis. Here, (\(\Sigma\)FDI)\((X)\) denotes the class of operators which can be written as a direct sum of finitely many (FDI) operators.
