Let \(\mathcal{S}\) denote the \(p\)-local stable homotopy category for some fixed \(p\). Let \(L_n\) be localisation at the wedge of Morava \(K\)-theories spectra \(K(0) \vee K(1) \vee \dots \vee K(n)\). The Telescope Conjecture states that \(L_n\) is isomorphic to \(L_n^f\): the localisation functor whose acyclics are generated by a finite spectrum of type \(n+1\). This paper considers three families of variations of the Telescope Conjecture. The first (TC1\(_n\)) says that the Bousfield class of \(K(n)\) is the same as the Bousfield class of \(T(n)\), a \(v_n\)-telescope of a finite spectrum of type \(n\). The second (TC2\(_n\)) states that \(L_n^f X \to L_n X\) is a weak equivalence for all \(X\) and the third (TC3\(_n\)) states that if \(X\) is a finite spectrum of type \(n\), and \(f\) is a \(v_n\)-self map then \(L_n X\) is given by the \(f\)-telescope of \(X\). It is well known (for \(\mathcal{S}\)) that TC1\(_{i}\) holds for all \(i\) if and only if either TC2\(_{i}\) holds for all \(i\) or TC3\(_{i}\) holds for all \(i\). A main result of the paper is that each of TC1\(_{i}\), TC2\(_{i}\) and TC3\(_{i}\) (for all \(i \geqslant 0\)) are shown to hold in many of the most important localisations of \(\mathcal{S}\). In detail, they hold in \(L_{K(\mathbb{N})} \mathcal{S}\), where \(K(\mathbb{N}) = \bigvee_{n \geqslant 0} K(n)\); \(L_{K(n)} \mathcal{S}\); \(L_{H \mathbb{F}_p} \mathcal{S}\); \(L_{BP} \mathcal{S}\) and \(L_{I} \mathcal{S}\), where \(I\) is the Brown-Conmetz dual of the sphere spectrum. The paper also considers the Generalised Smashing Conjecture (GSC), which states that every smashing localisation arises from localising away from a finite object. Developing on this idea, the author poses the Strongly Dualisable Generalised Smashing Conjecture (SDGSC), which states that every smashing localisation arises from localising away from a set of strongly dualisable objects. The second main result of the paper is a study of when these conjectures hold. Specifically, the GSC fails but the SDGSC holds in \(L_{K(\mathbb{N})} \mathcal{S}\), \(L_{H \mathbb{F}_p} \mathcal{S}\), and \(L_{I} \mathcal{S}\). In \(L_{BP} \mathcal{S}\) the SDGSC is open, but the GSC fails, and both conjectures hold in \(L_n \mathcal{S}\), \(L_{K(n)} \mathcal{S}\). The paper also proves a useful new result on the existence of localisations in certain triangulated categories and gives some calculations of Bousfield lattices. One consequence of the latter is that there are no objects \(X\) such that \(X \wedge X\) is trivial in the categories \(L_{K(\mathbb{N})} \mathcal{S}\), \(L_{H \mathbb{F}_p} \mathcal{S}\), \(L_{I} \mathcal{S}\), \(L_n \mathcal{S}\) and \(L_{K(n)} \mathcal{S}\).
