The aim of this paper is to introduce and analyze an \(hp\) finite element scheme for solving the two-dimensional Poisson problem on curved domains using curved elements. These elements are suitable for the use along the curved part of the boundary. Curved elements, like those introduced by \textit{M. Zlamal} [SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 10, 229--240 (1973; Zbl 0285.65067)], that are suitable for the curved part of the boundary are used. Some a priori error estimates are obtained and an a posteriori error estimator of residual type using curved elements which fit the curved domain is developed. In addition, the authors prove, under appropriate assumptions about the curved domain, the global reliability of the error indicator up to higher-order terms. Moreover, they also show the local efficiency of the indicator with a constant which depends on the polynomial degree of the element. Some numerical results that allow to assess the performance of the proposed \(hp\)-adaptive scheme on curved domains are presented.
