    The authors study restriction by considering the extension operator (adjoint of the restriction operator) \[ R^*f(x) = \int e^{ix \cdot \xi} f(\xi) \, d \sigma(\xi), \] where \(\sigma\) is the surface measure on the sphere \(S^d\), and \(x \in \mathbb{R}^{d+1}\). They do this by giving mixed norm estimates for \[ Ef(x, t) = E_{\phi}f(x, t) = \int e^{i (x \cdot \xi + t \phi(\xi) )} a(\xi) f(\xi) \, d \xi, (x,t) \in \mathbb{R}^d \times \mathbb{R}. \] For the adjoint \(R^*\), there are necessary and many sufficient condtions for it to map \(L^p(S^d) \mapsto L^q(\mathbb{R}^{d +1})\) see [\textit{F. Temur}, Rev. Mat. Iberoam. 30, No. 3, 1015--1036 (2014; Zbl 1318.42010)] for recent improvements in sufficient conditions. The authors go in a different direction by considering \(R^*\) as a mapping from the Sobolev space \(H^s(S^d)\) into \(L^q(\mathbb{R}^{d +1})\). The Knapp example (as it did for \(L^p\) spaces) is used to find necessary conditions and the authors show that the sufficient conditions derived by considering the embedding of \( H^s(S^d)\) into \(L^p((S^d)\) are sufficient for the map to be continuous. Precisely, their main result is: if \(d \geq \) and \(q < 2 (d +2)/d\), then a necessary and sufficient condition that \[ R^*: H^s(S^d) \mapsto L^q(\mathbb{R}^{d + 1}) \] is \[ s \geq s_q = \frac{d +2}{q} - \frac{d}{2}, \;\;\;q > 2(d +1)/d. \] This is derived from a weak type estimate for \(E\), and applied to give weighted Strichartz estimates for the fractional Schrödinger operator.
