This paper considers the one-dimensional generalized dispersive equation \[ \partial_t u-a_1\partial^2_x\partial_t u+a_2\partial^4_x\partial_t u+\partial_x \left(\frac{p+2}{p+1}u^{p+1}-\beta \left[u\partial_x(\partial_x u)^p+\frac{p}{p+1}(\partial_x u)^{p+1} \right] \right)=0, \] where \(a_1,a_2>0\), \(p\in \mathbb{Z}^+\), \(\beta \in \mathbb{R}\). When \(p=2\), the corresponding problem covers models for the deformations of a hyperelastic compressible plate relative to a uniformly pre-stressed state, as well as the BBM equation, the regularized long-wave Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation and the Camassa-Holm equation. Using a variational approach, it is shown that the above problem admits travelling wave solutions \(u(x,t) = v(x-ct)\) with \(v\) in the energy space \(H^2(\mathbb{R})\). More precisely, the travelling waves are sought as minimizers of an energy functional under a suitable constraint. The lack of compactness is dealt using the concentration-compactness principle.
