Continuity of discrete homomorphisms of diffeomorphism groups (Q2517171)

For a \(C^\infty\)-manifold \(M\) let Diff\(_c(M)\) be the group of \(C^\infty\) diffeomorphisms of \(M\) compactly supported and isotopic to the identity. A discrete group homomorphism \(\Phi:\text{Diff}_c(M)\to\text{Diff}_c(N)\) is weakly continuous if for every compact \(K\subset M\) the restriction \(\Phi\upharpoonright_{\text{Diff}_K(M)}\) is continuous, Diff\(_K(M)\) being those diffeomorphisms supported in \(K\). It is shown that \(\Phi\) is always weakly continuous. If, further, \(\Phi\) is non-trivial, \(N\) is closed and dim\((M)\geq\text{dim}(N)\) then dim\((M)=\text{dim}(N)\).
