The main result of the paper states that, given any closed orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold \(M\) and any closed orientable 3-manifold \(N\), there exists a finite cover \(M'\) of \(M\) and a degree-2 map from \(M'\) to \(N\) (in other words, every closed hyperbolic 3-manifold virtually 2-dominates every closed 3-manifold \(N\)). The proof is on the basis of recent strong results of Kahn, Markovic and Liu on the existence of \(\pi_1\)-injective immersed almost totally geodesic surfaces in hyperbolic 3-manifolds (and also immersed 2-complexes with certain properties) as well as of work of Agol on the virtual Haken conjecture and the LERF-property of the fundamental groups of hyperbolic 3-manifolds. It remains open and is asked by the author as a question whether degree-2 can be replaced by degree-1 in the main result.
