For a semiring with identity \(S\), the author gives natural definitions of right \(S\)-semimodules and \(S\)-homomorphisms. Then the extensions of the Baer criterion for injectivity and the embedding theorem of an arbitrary module over a ring into an injective module to the case of semirings are treated. The main theorem proved in the paper is: Each commutative semiring can be embedded in the additive monoid of a semiring satisfying the Baer condition (i.e., for any right ideal \(I\) of \(S\) and any \(S\)-homomorphism \(\varphi\colon I\to M\), \(M\) being a semimodule over \(S\), there is an \(S\)-homomorphism \(\overline\varphi\colon S\to M\) extending \(\varphi\)). Some criteria for a semiring \(S\) such that the Baer condition on \(S\) implies that \(S\) is a ring are also found.
