For a PI-algebra \(A\) over a field of characteristic 0, let \(c_n(A)\) be the codimension sequence. A well known conjecture of Regev states that asymptotically \(c_n(A)\simeq C\cdot n^{q/2}\cdot d^n\), where the exponent \(d\) is a nonnegative integer, \(q\) is an integer, and \(C\in\mathbb{R}\). In the paper under review the author confirms the conjecture of Regev for unital algebras of exponent 2. For this purpose he studies the proper cocharacter sequence \(\eta_\ell(A)=\sum_{\nu\vdash\ell}k(\nu)\chi_{\nu}\). For the reviewer, the most interesting result of the paper is that the multiplicities \(k(\nu)\) of the irreducible components of the proper cocharacter sequence are of period 2 and \(k(\nu_1,\nu_2,\dots,\nu_s)=k(\nu_1+2,\nu_2,\dots,\nu_s)\) for \(\ell\) sufficiently large. Another result gives that for (not necessarily unital) PI-algebras of exponent 1 (i.e. for polynomial growth of the codimension sequence) the ordinary multiplicities satisfy \(m(\lambda_1+1,\lambda_2,\dots,\lambda_s)=m(\lambda_1+1,\lambda_2,\dots,\lambda_s)\) for \(\lambda\vdash n\) and \(n\) large enough. Reviewer's remark. Very recently, the conjecture of Regev has been confirmed for unital algebras by \textit{A. Berele, A. Regev} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 360, No. 10, 5155-5172 (2008; Zbl 1161.16016)] for finitely generated algebras and by \textit{A. Berele} [Adv. Appl. Math. 41, No. 1, 52-75 (2008; Zbl 1145.05052)] for arbitrary unital algebras.
