The second edition of this useful book now appears in two volumes, with the volume under review being volume one. The book presents a full general purpose and application independent account of the theory of the Moiré phenomenon, based on Fourier series. The first few chapters present the basic theory, covering the superposition of monochrome periodic layers, while in later chapters this is extended to polychromatic Moirés, and Moirés between repetitive and non-periodic layers. The mathematical discussion is well supported by pictorial results and illustrative examples. The book can be recommended for use by students, scientists and engineers who wish to study the Moiré effect. The mathematical prerequisites are modest, as they only amount to a knowledge of elementary calculus and familiarity with some basic results from the theory of Fourier series.
