A real Banach space \(X\) admits a complex structure if there is an operator \(S: X\to X\) with \(S^2=-\text{Id}\). Therefore, the worst that can happen in this respect is that every operator on \(X\) satisfies \[ \|\text{Id}+T^2\|=1+\| T^2\|; \] in this case, the authors say that \(X\) is extremely non-complex. In the present paper, the authors prove that some \(C(K)\)-spaces with ``few'' operators constructed by \textit{P.\,Koszmider} [Math.\ Ann.\ 330, No.\,1, 151--183 (2004; Zbl 1064.46009)] and \textit{G.\,Plebanek} [Topology Appl.\ 143, No.\,1--3, 217--239 (2004; Zbl 1064.46011)] are extremely non-complex. They also provide examples of extremely non-complex \(C(K)\)-spaces having various additional properties, like containing isometric copies of \(\ell_\infty\). Reviewer's remark: Recently, the authors have succeeded in constructing extremely non-complex Banach spaces that are not isomorphic to \(C(K)\)-spaces [``Isometries on extremely non-complex Banach spaces'', preprint (2009; arXiv:0901.1512)].
