In this paper, the authors study \textit{classical current algebras}. Note that \textit{classical current algebras} are related to the classical r-matrices and they are quasi-classical limits of SOS-type \textit{quantized elliptic current algebras}. Let \(\Sigma\) be a covering of an elliptic curve and assume that the Green distributions are regularization of certain quasi-doubly periodic meromorphic functions. Define the \textit{elliptic classical current algebras} to be the centrally extended algebras of currents. The authors prove a couple of results on these algebras. Namely, there are two essentially different choices of the test function algebras with respect to a different covering \(\Sigma\); and the same quasi-doubly periodic meromorphic functions regularized with respect to the different test function algebras define different quasi-Lie bialgebra structures and, therefore, different \textit{classical elliptic current algebras}; and the internal structures of these two elliptic algebras are essentially different regardless a similarity in the commutation relations between their half-currents. For Part II, see J. Gen. Lie Theory Appl. 2, No. 2, 79--93 (2008; Zbl 1214.17006).
