\textit{M. Griebel}, \textit{P. Oswald} and \textit{T. Schiekofer} [Numer. Math. 83, No. 2, 279--312 (1999; Zbl 0935.65131)] proved that spaces generated by linear combinations of some two-dimensional Haar functions exhibit nice orders of approximation for solutions of the single-layer potential equation in a rectangle. A short survey of \(H^s\)-approximations (\(s<0\)) in the periodical case is given [cf. \textit{V. N. Temlyakov}, Approximation of periodic functions. Commack, NY: Nova Science Publishers (1993; Zbl 0899.41001)]. The author establishes here results on the approximation for the hyperbolic crosses and on the best \(N\)-term approximations by linear combinations of Haar functions in the \(H^s\)-norms, \(-1<s<1/2\). Some open problems have also been mentioned in the paper.
