For the numerical solution of self-adjoint nonlinear differential equations of the form \((- (p y')' + q y)/ w = F (y)\) with some nonlinearity \(F\) and suitable boundary conditions, the authors construct and investigate a new algorithm. The main focus is on the case that the solution is sought on an interval of infinite length or that one of the functions \(1/p\) and \(q\) is not integrable on the interval of interest. It is known that in these cases the solution may become singular (unbounded or strongly oscillating) as its argument tends to one of the ends of the interval. The authors provide some insight into the analytical properties of the solution, develop special techniques for handling the singularities and study the convergence behaviour of their algorithm.
