The peak quasisymmetric functions were defined by \textit{J. R. Stembridge} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 349, No. 2, 763--788 (1997; Zbl 0863.06005)]. They form an algebra \(\mathrm{PQSym}\) which is a subalgebra of the algebra \(\mathrm{QSym}\) of quasisymmetric functions. \textit{S. Hsiao} [``Structure of the peak Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions'', Preprint, \url{http://math.bard.edu/hsiao/research/papers/peakalg-jan03.pdf}] constructed a free polynomial basis of \(\mathrm{PQSym}\) over \(\mathbb Q\). The author proves a structure theorem for \(\mathrm{PQSym}\), as a peak analogous of the construction for \(\mathrm{QSym}\) by \textit{M. Hazewinkel} [Acta Appl. Math. 109, No. 1, 39--44 (2010; Zbl 1209.05260)]. The construction is based on a lambda-ring structure for the algebra. It gives a free polynomial basis over \(\mathbb Q\), different from Hsiao's.
