The purpose of the paper is to show that if \(u\) is a solution of an evolution equation of certain type (for example Schrödinger wave equation) fulfilling suitable conditions (in particular the zero Dirichlet boundary condition) and it decays exponentially with time on any compact set, then \(u\) must vanish identically. A particular case of the main theorem of the paper is the theorem of \textit{C. S. Morawetz} [Commun. Pure Appl. Math. 16, 353--362 (1963; Zbl 0117.06402)]. One cannot give here shortly and with all details the results of the paper, because the necessary notations and formulations are not very simple and short.
