Summary: In this paper the authors obtain results on the homology groups, \(H_n(L) = \text{Tor}_n^{U(L)}(K,K)\) of a Lie algebra \(L\) over a field \(K\), similar to those, which are obtained in the case of the ``Homology of groups'' by \textit{J. Stallings} [J. Algebra 2, 170--181 (1965; Zbl 0135.05201)] and \textit{U. Stammbach} [Math. Z. 94, 157--177 (1966; Zbl 0144.26001)]. By means of Hochschild-Serre spectral sequence for the homology of Lie algebras \(L\) with respect to an ideal \(\overline L\) of \(L\), they obtain an exact sequence \[H_2(L)\rightarrow H_2(L/\overline L) \rightarrow \overline L/[L,\overline L] \rightarrow H_1(L) \rightarrow H_1(L/\overline L) \rightarrow 0 \] from which many results concerning the ascending and descending central series of the Lie algebra \(L\), are obtained, one of these being an analogue of the H. Hopf's formula for the second homology group of the Lie algebra \(L\), with respect to a presentation of \(L\) as the quotient of a free Lie algebra \(F\). Also the analogues of these results for the case of the restricted Lie algebras of characteristic \(p>0\) are obtained, where the homology groups considered, are those of Hochschild's for this case.
