The purpose of the present paper is to derive some results for quantum spin systems similar to those derived earlier for classical spin systems [\textit{G. Gallavotti} and \textit{S. Miracle-Sole}, Commun. Math. Phys. 5, 317--323 (1967; Zbl 0154.46501); \textit{D. Ruelle}, ibid. 5, 324--329 (1967; Zbl 0154.46502); \textit{D. W. Robinson} and \textit{D. Ruelle}, ibid. 5, 288--300 (1967; Zbl 0144.48205)]. The method used is based on some results of \textit{R. B. Griffiths} [``A proof that the free energy of a spin system is extensive''. J. Math. Phys. 5, 1215--1222 (1964; \url{doi:10.1063/1.1704228})] and of Peierls [cf. \textit{D. Ruelle}, Helv. Phys. Acta 36, 789--799 (1963; Zbl 0121.22701)] and is the same as that developed in the papers of Gallavotti and Miracle-Sole and of Ruelle referred to above. It is shown ``that for a large class of interactions and a wide range of thermodynamic parameters the equilibrium state is describable by an extremal \(Z^\nu\)-invariant state (a single phase state) over a \(C^*\)-algebra of local observables'' and ``that the equilibrium state may be obtained as the solutions of a variational problem involving the mean entropy''. This paper is the first one of a series of papers by the same author of which the second appeared in [Commun. Math. Phys. 7, 337--348 (1968; Zbl 0162.29304)] and the third (in cooperation with \textit{O. E. Lanford} III [ibid. 9, 327--338 (1968; Zbl 0172.27702)].
