The basic equations of the Chew, Goldberger and Low (CGL) theory of an anisotropic plasma are solved in the small amplitude approximation. The CGL magnetohydrodynamic equations for a selfgravitating fluid having an anisotropic stress tensor (the pressure is different in the directions along and across the magnetic field lines) are linearized in such a way that without perturbation, the plasma is macroscopically at rest and permeated by a magnetic field. The linear equations are derived for the perturbations of velocity, density, pressure, magnetic field and gravitational potential. The linearized equations and boundary conditions are then formulated for cylindrical geometry. Solutions are given in wave form for an infinitely long cylinder. In the case of the infinite cylinder, for the wave vector \(k<k_{\text{crit}} = (4\pi Gg^2/3p_{\#})^{1/2}\) a gravitational instability of Jeans' type develops. For \(h=B^2/8\pi\mu+p_{\perp}-p_{\#} <0\) the so-called hose-instability occurs. It is shown that torsional oscillations exist in an infinite cylinder. Finally standing wave solutions for a finite cylinder are derived. The results are discussed, the approach and special results of other authors are compared.
