\textit{M. Auslander} and \textit{I. Reiten} [Math. Ann. 277, 345--349 (1987; Zbl 0611.13009)] initiated Auslander-Reiten theory in the category of maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules over Cohen-Macaulay algebras. There are many attempts to introduce the Auslander-Reiten translation and Auslander-Reiten formula in the category of complexes of representations of quivers [\textit{R. Bautista} et al., Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (3) 106, No. 1, 97--162 (2013; Zbl 1284.16012); J. Algebra 287, No. 1, 140--168 (2005; Zbl 1128.16011)], [\textit{J. Le}, J. Pure Appl. Algebra 213, No. 7, 1430--1437 (2009; Zbl 1205.16014)] and [\textit{B.-L. Xiong} et al., Forum Math. 26, No. 3, 863--912 (2014; Zbl 1319.16017)]. In the present paper, the author intends to specify the Auslander-Reiten translation and study Auslander-Reiten theory in the category of bounded complexes of all finite generated maximal Cohen-Macaulay \(R\)-modules, where \(R\) is a commutative Cohen-Macaulay local ring. The authors' approach is based on the original proof due to Auslander and Reiten in the category of maximal Cohen-Macaulay \(R\)-modules over Cohen-Macaulay algebras. As an application of their result, in case \(R\) is Gorenstein, they consider the bounded derived category of complexes of finitely generated \(R\)-modules. Then they study the existence of Auslander-Reiten triangles in the category of perfect complexes as a full triangulated subcategory of the bounded derived category. Indeed, they can prove that any perfect complex with local endomorphism ring admits Auslander-Reiten triangles. Note that, in case \(R\) is regular, the bounded derived category of complexes of finitely generated \(R\)-modules coincides with the category of perfect complexes. So this result can be viewed as a version of \textit{D. Happel}'s theorem [Triangulated categories in the representation theory of finite dimensional algebras. Cambridge (UK) etc.: Cambridge University Press (1988; Zbl 0635.16017)] for regular rings.
