This work deals with the problem of characterizing rings of finite injective dimension. Let \(R\) be a semi-primary rings and \(N\) its radical. A detailed study is made of the case \(N^2 =0\) in \S2. The author introduces the notion of connected sequences of cycles of primitive idempotents, which is a generalization of connected sequences utilized in the study of global dimension (cf. \textit{J. P. Jans} and \textit{T. Nakayama} [Nagoya math. J. 11, 67--76 (1957; Zbl 0212.05805)]). If \(\operatorname{l.}\mathrm{inj.} \dim R=s\) is finite, this value \(s\) is characterized as the maximal length of such sequences. Then it is proved as a main result that \(R\) is the ring direct product of a quasi-Frobenius ring and a semi-primary ring of finite global dimension. It follows the equivalence of conditions \(\mathrm{l.}\operatorname{inj.} \dim R = s <\infty\) and \(\operatorname{l.}\operatorname{inj.} \dim R = s <\infty\). In \S3 it is proved for a semi-primitive ring \(R\) that the condition \(\operatorname{l.}\mathrm{inj.} \dim R=0\) is equivalent to \(R\) being an artinian uniserial ring. A ring \(R\) is called restricted quasi-Frobenius if \(R/I\) is quasi-Frobenius for every two-sided ideal \(I\neq 0\). It is proved in \S4 if a noetherian semi-local ring \(R\) is restricted quasi-Frobenius, then either \(R\) is artinian or \(R\) is a principal ideal domain with non-nilpotent Jacobson radical and every ideal is a product of powers of maximal ideals. In the Appendix, it is shown that if both left and right injective dimensions of \(R\) are finite they coincide under the condition that \(R\) is noetherian or semi-primary. Finally it is shown the existence of an artinian ring \(R\) for which \(\operatorname{l.}\mathrm{inj.} \dim R =1\) and \(\operatorname{l.}\mathrm{inj.} \dim R/N^2 =\infty\).
