Let \(D\) be a Dedekind ring with quotient field \(k\), \(K\) an infinite algebraic extension of \(k\), \(L\) a finite extension of \(K\), and \(A, B\) the integral closures of \(D\) in \(K, L\), resp. If \(A\) is a Dedekind ring there are classical criteria involving the discriminant for deciding when \(B\) is a free \(A\)-module, and, in case \(L\) is a quadratic extension of \(K\), when \(B\) has a normal \(A\)-basis. The author describes these and obtains generalizations for \(B/A\) when \(A\) is not necessarily Dedekind. The results for quadratic extensions require the assumption, valid for cyclotomic \(\Gamma\)-extensions of number fields, that over each prime ideal of \(D\) lie only a finite number of prime ideals of \(A\).
