The author determines the number of solutions of the congruence \(y^2\equiv x^6-a\pmod p\) in terms of the decomposition of \(p\) in the ring of the Eisenstein integers and the third and sixth power residue symbol. The formula is derived by elementary arguments and with the help of some results of \textit{L. E. Dickson} [Am. J. Math. 57, 391--424 (1935; Zbl 0012.01203)].
