The problem \(Au=f\), where \(A\) is a linear operator, is discussed. The resolving power of the problem is defined as \(\|\Delta f\|/\|\Delta u\|\), where \(\Delta f\) and \(\Delta u\) are the perturbation in \(f\), and the resulting perturbation in \(u\), respectively. The particularity of the solution is defined as \(d = \| u\|/ \|(R_{C}A - I)u\|\), where \(R_C\) is an approximation of the inverse of \(A\). The Fredholm equation of the first kind is considered as a model problem. It is shown that the proposed criterion for an optimal choice of the regularization parameter (with which the resolving power and the particularity are brought into line) is correct.
