The author gives a survey of both earlier and recent results about extremal functions for continuous linear functionals on the Bergman space \(A^p\) \((1\leq p<\infty)\) of the disk. An extremal function always exists and is unique for \(1<p<\infty\). For every bounded linear functional on \(A^p\) there exists a representing analytic kernel in \(A^q\) \((1/p+1/q=1)\). If the kernel is in the Hardy space \(H^q\), then the extremal function belongs to \(H^p\). The proof is given. If the kernel is a polynomial of degree \(N\), then the extremal function is described exactly without its proof. For \(p=1\), the situation is very different. Let \(\mu\in L^\infty(D)\) and let the functional \(\Phi\) on \(A^1\) be defined by \(\mu\). Then \(\mu\) is the complex dilatation of some extremal Teichmüller map (of the unit disk onto itself) if and only if \(|\Phi|= |\mu|_\infty\). Using this result, he gives an example of the functional \(\Phi\) on \(A^1\) which does not possess an extremal function.
