In this article is defined a category called weak \(C^*\)-Hopf algebras, generalizing (compact) \(C^*\)-Hopf algebras, which is self dual in finite dimension, its objects are the quadruplets \((A,\Delta,\varepsilon,S)\) satisfying the usual axioms of a (compact) \(C^*\)-Hopf algebra except the fact that the coproduct \(\Delta\) is not necessarily unital. This setting is, in finite dimension, tightly related to generalized Kac algebras by \textit{T. Yamanouchi} [J. Algebra 163, No. 1, 9-50 (1994; Zbl 0830.46047)] and to quantum groupoids by \textit{G. Maltsiniotis} [C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris, Sér. I 314, No. 4, 249-252 (1992; Zbl 0767.17015)] or their von Neumann algebra version by the reviewer [J. Oper. Theory 35, No. 1, 39-65 (1996; Zbl 0849.22002)]. A construction of a family of those objects is done, coming from the pentagon equations, and a 13 dimensional example is precisely studied for which the antipode \(S\) is not involutive when, in finite dimension, for a semisimple and cosemisimple Hopf algebra over a field \(k\) of characteristic 0, this antipode is necessarily involutive [\textit{R. G. Larson} and \textit{D. E. Radford}, Am. J. Math. 110, No. 1, 187-195 (1988; Zbl 0637.16006)].
