In partial answer to a question of R. D. Luce in connection with certainty equivalents of gambles, the author offers a theorem listing all differentiable real solutions with nonzero derivative of the functional equation \(u(s)+u(g(s)+f(t))=u(g(s))+u(s+t)\) \((s,t\in\mathbb{R})\). As main tool the continuous solutions of \(A(s+t)=B(s)C(t)+D(s)\) are determined by proving and then using differentiability. Reviewer's remarks: For direct methods of solution for the latter equation, see e.g. \textit{E. Vincze} [Publ. Math. 9, 149-163 (1962; Zbl 0125.35803)] and the reviewer, On applications and theory of functional equations (1969; Zbl 0176.12801)].
