The author deals with the space \(J_n^k(t)\) of Jacobi forms on \({\mathcal H}_n \times\mathbb{C}^n\) of weight \(k\) and index \(t\), where \({\mathcal H}_n\) stands for the Siegel half-space of degree \(n\). At first it is shown by elementary methods that \(J_n^k(t) \neq \{0\}\) for all \(k,t \geq c_n\). This implies that not all Jacobi forms are Fourier-Jacobi coefficients of Siegel modular forms of degree \(n+1\). The main result is \[ \dim J_n^k(t)= {O} \bigl(\max (k,t)^{n (n+1)/2} t^n\bigr), \] where the \({O}\)-symbol only depends on \(n\). This estimate is applied to automorphic functions with respect to the Jacobi group. It is shown that the field of these functions is an algebraic function field of degree \({n(n+1) \over 2}+n\), which is the complex dimension of the underlying space.
