For a Tikhonov space \(X\) let \(C_b(X)\) denote the set of all bounded continuous real-valued functions defined on \(X\). If \(\alpha\) is an ordinal number, then: (1) \(S_\alpha\) is the set of all \(Y\subset X\) such that either \(Y\) is finite or \(|Y|= \aleph_\lambda\) implies \(\aleph_{\lambda+\alpha} < |X|\); (2) \(\Phi_\alpha\) is the locally convex topology on \(C_b(X)\) generated by the family of seminorms \(\{p_Y:Y \in S_\alpha\}\), where \(p_Y(f)= \sup\{|f(x) |:x \in Y\}\). The main results of the paper are: (a) If \(X\) is a discrete space, then \(|X|\leq\aleph_\alpha\) if and only if the unit ball is compact in \((C_b(X), \Phi_\alpha)\); (b) If \(X\) and \(Y\) are infinite discrete spaces, then \(|X|=|Y|\) if and only if the spaces \((C_b(X), \Phi_\alpha)\) and \((C_b(Y), \Phi_\alpha)\) are homeomorphic; (c) \(\text{cof} (|X|)= \text{bar} (C_b(X), \Phi_0)\), where for a locally convex space \(E\), \(\text{bar} (E)\) is the supremum of all cardinals \(\kappa\) such that every pointwise bounded collection \(\{\Lambda_i: i\in I\}\), \(|I|< \kappa\), in the topological dual of \(E\) is equicontinuous.
