Let \(\mu:{\mathcal A}\to G\) and \(\nu:{\mathcal B}\to G\) be group-valued (finitely additive) measures on fields \({\mathcal A}\) and \({\mathcal B}\) of subsets of a set \(X\). The authors study with concepts of category theory the problem, when \(\mu\) and \(\nu\) have a common extension to a \(G\)-valued measure on the algebra generated by \({\mathfrak A}\) and \({\mathfrak B}\). A particular role here plays the quotient group \(S(a({\mathcal U}))/S({\mathcal U})\), where \({\mathcal U}\) is a system of subsets of \(X\) closed under the operations of disjoint union and proper difference, \(a({\mathcal U})\) denotes the field generated by \({\mathcal U}\) and \(S({\mathcal U})\) the group of \(\mathbb{Z}\)-valued functions on \(X\) generated by the indicator functions \(I_U\) for \(U\in{\mathcal U}\).
