The authors study the linear and nonlinear stability of a viscous incompressible flow in a channel with one compliant wall. A 7-deck technique is applied, which involves a Stokes layer, critical layers, and diffusive layers. Two small parameters are used: the former is related to the Reynolds number, the latter to the perturbation size. An amplitude equation is derived and its asymptotics are studied. In the nonlinear case, the authors impose a relationship on the two small parameters, and study numerically the influence of the parameters on the linear neutral stability characteristics. The comparison with the rigid-wall case is always in view. The authors also examine limiting cases as some wall parameters go to infinity. Finally, they provide asymptotic and numerical results for the nonlinear amplitude equation.
