The authors define certain combinations of multiquadrics, denoted as \(\Psi\)-splines, and investigate their properties. In particular, the strong analogy between these \(\Psi\)-splines and the usual polynomial B-splines is pointed out at several places. The definition of \(\Psi\) is roughly as follows: For \(k\in\mathbb{N}\), \(c>0\), and \(x\in\mathbb{R}\), let \[ \Psi(x,2k)=(x^2+c^2)^{(2k-1)/2} \] denote the basic generalized multiquadric of order \(2k\). Then, for each \(j\in\mathbb{Z}\), the \(\Psi\)-spline \(\Psi_{j,2k}\) is defined as the divided difference of order \(2k\), \[ \Psi_{j,2k}(x)={t_{j+2k}-t_j\over 2} [x-t_j, x-t_{j+1},\dots,x-t_{j+2k}]\Psi(x,2k), \] where \(\{l_j\}\) is a bi-infinite mesh of real numbers. Throughout the paper, many interesting results on the \(\Psi\)'s are proved, concerning polynomial reproduction properties, convolution, global linear independence, and the approximation order of quasi-interpolants, constructed from the \(\Psi\)-splines.
