The paper is devoted to the analysis of some mathematical problems connected with diffraction of a time harmonic wave in traverse magnetic polarization by periodic inhomogeneous materials. The generalized Helmholtz equation is associated with boundary conditions of special type. If the solution exists, the convergence of the finite element method is considered; approximations of nonlocal boundary operators are taken into account.
