Let \(A,B,C\) and \(D\) be \(m\times n\) matrices over \(\mathbb{C}\). Consider the matrix solutions \(X\) (respectively, \(X\) and \(Y\)) to the equations: (1) \(AXC^T-BXD^T=0\) and (2) \(AX+BY=0\), \(XC^T+YD^T=0\). The author describes canonical bases for the solutions to (1) and (2), respectively, in terms of the Kronecker canonical forms for the pencils on the pairs \((A,B)\) and \((C,D)\). The author also describes a canonical form for any pair \((E,F)\) of matrices satisfying \(E^2=F^2=EF=FE=0\), and uses this to construct a canonical basis for the second root subspace of a \(2\)-parameter eigenvalue problem.
