      The authors show that a finite dimensional Lie algebra over a field \(F\) is almost nilpotent by abelian if and only if \(L\) is simple semiabelian or \(L=sl_2(F)\) where \(F\) is of characteristic 0. Then they consider the case of prime characteristic \(p\). Suppose that \(L\) is solvable and Frattini free. \(L\) is almost nilpotent by abelian if and only if \(L=A \oplus B\) where \(A\) is the unique minimal ideal of \(L\), \(\dim A \geq 2\), \(A^2=0\) and either \(B=M \oplus Fx\) is a semidirect sum with \(M\) a minimal ideal of \(B\) and \(M^2=0\) or \(B\) is three dimensional Heisenberg. Furthermore, if \(p \geq 3\), then \(\dim A\) is divisible by \(p\).
