The polynomials contained in the linear span of lattice translates of a box spline constitute an intersection space of kernels of some linear partial differential operators. The dimension of this space can be estimated using more easily computable dimensions of some basic blocks. It is shown that a lower bound holds under more general conditions than known before, see \textit{A. Ron} and \textit{C. de Boor} [Constructive Approximation 6, No. 3, 287-302 (1990; Zbl 0719.41006)]. The condition is investigated under which the equality is sharp. Essential tools for the new result are perturbation techniques for polynomials, the topological degree, and certain properties of polynomial mappings and algebraic functions.
