The two-dimensional steady-state sliding contact of a rigid indentor on a thermoelastic solid and between two dissimilar thermoelastic solids is considered. The contact is irregular in the sense that it may occur on multiple zones of different sizes. Problems of contact governed by Coulomb friction as well as problems of semi-sticking contact are treated by using analytical approximations for coupled thermoelasticity. Material mismatch and friction effects on the eigenvalues are noted, and exact expressions are given for the effective thermoelastic Rayleigh/Stoneley speeds, which serve as the limiting values for the sliding speed.
