The authors study asymptotic properties of a compressible viscous fluid filling a domain exterior to a compact region, if the prescribed velocity at infinity is zero. For small external data they prove existence and uniqueness of solutions such that the velocity decays to 0 with the rate \(|x|^{-1}\) as \(x\to\infty\) and the density tends to a constant. The proof is based on the splitting of the linearized Poisson-Stokes system into a Stokes equation (governing the incompressible part of the velocity), a Neumann problem (governing the compressible part of the velocity), and a transport equation governing the density.
